Qualifications of a pastor

Expectations:

  1. He has an evangelical background and must demonstrate a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. He must have a strong personal faith grounded in a life of prayer, a study of the scriptures and be in close community with other believers. He allocates sufficient time for personal spiritual health and growth.

  2. He has a broad understanding and sympathetic appreciation of the various cultural faith traditions within Christianity and the various ways Christians worship, including an ability to participate enthusiastically in both traditional and contemporary forms of worship.

  3. He lives an exemplary Christian life, demonstrating the attitudes, feelings, values, enthusiasm and dedication that he seeks to develop in all persons in our congregation.

  4. He is centred on the gospel and its advancement, and on fulfilling the great commission by equipping the saints for the work of the ministry. (Matthew 28:18-20 and Ephesians 4:11-13)

  5. He must demonstrate spiritual and emotional maturity. He must, through his actions and conduct, be able to gain the respect of the church members and the community at large. He must have the qualities of an elder/overseer as set out in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

  6. He will express and seek to cultivate in our congregation, a real love and sympathetic understanding for all people regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or socio-economic status.

  7. He should have good interpersonal skills which will enable him to relate to people from a vast variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds and people of all ages. He should have a good sense of humour.

  8. He has strong expository bible preaching and teaching skills as well as counselling and communication abilities.

  9. He has a heart for evangelistic outreach and ministry to our community and the world. He will be open and sensitive to the Lord in discerning a vision for the outreach and ministry of Grace Church. He must be able to handle the rigours of ministering in an international church in Vienna.

  10. He has a seminary or theological education and has at least 2-4 years of pastoral experience.

  11. He is fluent in both written and spoken English and must be willing to learn German in order to manage everyday life situations.

  12. He accepts and abides by the Grace Church constitution and bylaws

  13. The church is committed to fully supporting the Pastor. At the same time, if the need arises or the opportunity presents itself, he should be willing to raise funds to support himself and his family.

  14. He commits himself to at least 5 years of full-time pastoral service.

Ministry Responsibilities:

  1. The Pastor commits to leading and/or serving at Grace Church’s activities, retreats and events.

  2. The Pastor will faithfully preach the Word of God through Spirit-filled, educational, inspirational and evangelistic sermons. He must be a competent teacher of the Bible and must possess a firm foundation in the Word of God.

  3. He will work to equip and motivate the congregation to spread the Good News to their families, their communities and the city of Vienna by word and deed.

  4. He will ensure that prayer (both individual and corporate) is the foundation of our personal growth and ministry.

  5. He will seek to develop mentoring relationships as opportunities allow and will be active in the development of other people’s spiritual gifts.

  6. He will offer support and guidance to the Board of Elders and to the various committees of our Church.

  7. He will participate administratively in our Church government, providing pastoral leadership while still respecting our congregational polity and the elected authority of our Board of Elders.

  8. The Pastor reports and submits to the Council of Elders.

Requirements:

  3. Please explain why you are interested in serving at Grace Church and give us an insight into your vision for ministry.

  4. Submit 3 sermons – (expository, topical, and one of your choice). Best way is to provide a link to your current Church where we can listen to your sermons online, and/or through www.wetransfer.com

  5. Submit your Curriculum Vitae and a copy of your Certificate in Theological Studies

  6. Submit 3 references – (professional, personal, pastor)
